The work of the Russian physicist Michael B. Mensky is of immense significance for the modern world. In his articles and his book

Consciousness and Quantum Mechanics: Life in Parallel Worlds

he provides a comprehensive spiritual psycho-metaphysics based on the discoveries of quantum physics, offering an entirely modern context for the truths
of various spiritual 'mystical' traditions. Mensky's presentation is particularly close to Buddhist psycho-metaphysics. In this book Graham Smetham elucidates, in great detail,
Mensky's work in the context of Buddhist psycho-metaphysics, especially the remarkable text

Dharmadharmatavibhanga (Distinguishing Phenomena from their Intrinsic Nature).

Graham also demonstrates how Mensky's proposed quantum 'look-ahead mechanism' underlies the many examples of mind over matter documented in the hugely important work

Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century.

Graham also uses Mensky's quantum psycho-metaphysical paradigm to debunk some attempts to provide materialist accounts of quantum phenomena and the nature of consciousness.
In particular Graham demolishes some of the metaphysically confused anti-quantum-spiritual diatribes by the New Scientist book reviews editor Amanda Gefter in her recent book

Trespassing on Einstein's Lawn: A Father, a Daughter, the Meaning of Nothing, and the Beginning of Everything.

Phenomena as they appear and resound
Are neither established nor real
Since they keep changing in all possible and various manners
Just like appearances in magical illusions.
                                                                -Asvaghosa

- the first comprehensive and detailed exposition of the remarkable meeting of Western Science and Buddhist thought.  Many of the dramatic parallels and interconnections outlined, in spectacular detail, have not been described before.

Modern science has overturned its own foundations and now presents a picture of reality which is in accord with that proposed by Buddhist sages of two thousand years ago. The Madhyamika philosophers developed a rigorous and  razor sharp method of philosophical analysis which, together with meditation investigation, penetrated into the ultimate nature of reality.

Emptiness, the core view which is propounded by the Madhyamaka, is the insight that there is nothing in the universe which exists as an independent entity in its own right. It follows that nothing exists as a fully independent feature of reality as was always thought by Western science up until the advent of quantum physics. Indeed, an understanding of Emptiness can throw new perspectives onto problems of quantum interpretation.

The search for the ultimate TOE (a theory of everything) has become a central concern for modern physicists. But it is seldom appreciated that without integrating the phenomenon of consciousness within the 'physical' worldview any such TOE will not have a leg to stand on. This fact is unaviodable becuase consciousness is implicated at the quantum level. As the physicists Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner have recently indicated:

Consciousness and the quantum enigma are not just two mysteries; they are the two mysteries; first, our physical demonstration of the quantum enigma, faces us with the fundamental mystery of the objective world ‘out there;’ the second, conscious awareness, faces us with the fundamental mystery of the subjective, mental world ‘in here.’  Quantum mechanics seems to connect the two.

The Grand Designer:

Discovering the Quantum
Mind Matrix of the Universe

This book corrects the erronious materialist claims of writers such as
Steven Hawking, Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett.
It clearly shows, with a wealth of scientific and philosophical detail,
that recent quantum and evolutionary discoveries require the existence
of a cosmic intentionality which functions to drive sentience to ever greater heights
of self-awareness. The recent work by Hawking and Mlodinow - THE GRAND DESIGN
for instance is seriously misleading in its final conclusions. For if we pursue their
own metaphysical insights we discover the necessity of a Quantum Mind Matrix
of the universe - The Grand Designer

The Theory of Everything outlined by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow in their book The Grand Design: New Answers to the Ultimate Questions of Life is remarkable in a way that probably goes beyond the comprehension of the authors. In fact the metaphysical model of the creation and functioning of the universe presented in this work has truly awe-inspiring and deeply significant implications for our understanding of and our engagement with the process of reality. In particular it must be pointed out that in actuality the account presented rules out a particular picture of God, the picture generally associated with simplistic and fundamentalist views of theistic religion. However there are much less simplistic and more philosophically coherent images of the notion of God which are associated with the mystical dimensions of theistic religions; this is the notion of God as the infinitely creative source and sustainer of the universe, a creative dimension of Being that, seemingly with purpose, fragments an infinite primordial awareness into a vast multitude of experiencing sentient beings. Far from being a mere possible addition to the Hawking-Mlodinow metaphysical model, we shall see in the course of this book that such a ‘mystical’ vision of the creative source of the process of the universe is required in order for the proposed TOE to get off the ground.

The Design of The Grand Designer

Mind, Matter and the Queer Quantum Universe

An introductory investigation of the unscientific and wholly mistaken nature of the crude materialism which is central to the neo, or ultra, Darwinism promoted (or preached) by Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett. Both of these contemporary ‘thinkers’ ignore the evidence of quantum physics in order to claim that the metaphysical ‘matter’ of the classical world of physics still exists, despite the fact that just about every physicist of the early quantum era, as well as those currently investigating the mystery, con-cluded and conclude that this metaphysical position must be false.

Mindless Models of Material Minds

An overview of some of the bizarre and absurd attempts at producing plausible arguments which are meant to prove that the sentient realm of mind and consciousness arises from complete, utter, absolute and irredeemable mindlessness. The featured proponents of mindlessness are covered in the following sections:

Dennett’s Dangerous Idea: Mindless Minds! - A refutation of Daniel Dennett’s mindless materialism.

Searle’s Chinese Room shows a lack of ‘understanding’! – John Searle actually hedges his bets by claiming that there is more to mind than mere movements of matter, but ultimately seems to think that it’s not in a league of its own.

The Materialist Dogma of the Church of the Churchlands – Patricia and Paul Churchland are uncompromising in their adherence to the faith of materialism; faithfully ignoring the evidence of quantum physics.

Damasio’s ‘Wordless Knowledge’ in ‘The Feeling of What Happens’ – The neurobiologist Antonio Damasio happens to feel that purely material ‘wordless knowledge’ produces consciousness.

Sperry’s Convenient ‘Supervenient’ ‘Wheelness’ – Roger Sperry rolls out a convenient, but spurious, new concept to try and forge a bridge across the yawning epistemic gap.

Greenfield – The Brain Does / Doesn’t Generate Consciousness! – Susan Greenfield unwittingly hedges her bets by paradoxically adopting both positions depending on which page you are on.

Hofstadter’s Beer Cans Can Generate Consciousness! - Douglas Hofstadter proposes an inebriated version of materialism.

Crick’s Astonishing Hypothesis – You’re Just a Pack of Neurons! – Francis Crick has discovered the secret of life – its mindless DNA!

Ramachandran’s Colour Blind Martian Super-Scientist sees Red! - Brain scientist Vilayanur Ramachandran appeals to deficient extra-terrestrial conceptual juggling in pursuit of the material mind.

Dawkins – Infected and Blinded by the ‘The Selfish Gene’ Meme? – Richard Dawkins is in pursuit of appropriate material metaphors to explain ultimate mindlessness.

Susan Blackmore – The Mindless Evolution of Meme Machines. – The creation of consciousness through the evolutionary mindless, yet meemingful (!), machinery of imitation!

Quantum Minds!

An overview of a few significant attempts to produce a unified metaphysical account of the functioning of reality conceived of as a process of an ultimate quantum Mindnature. The quantum mind/consciousness perspectives covered are:

David Bohm’s Implicate Order – The visionary physicist suggests that dualistic mind and matter unfold from a unified Mindnature field.

Karl Pribram’s Holonomic Brain – The brain as holographic storage device in a holographic Mindnature universe.

David Chalmers – The Quantum Solution to the ‘Hard’ Problem? – An overview of Chalmer’s analysis indicates that quantum Mindnature monism is an easy way to solve the ‘hard’ problem.

Max Velmans – Dual Aspect Information Theory and Reflexive Monism – Deep reflection on ‘Reflexive Monism’ shows that information is all in the Mindnature.

Penrose/Hameroff – The Orch OR of Fundamental SpaceTime – A Mindnature orchestration of Orchestrated Objective-Reduction gets to the bottom of the ‘matter’ of funda-mental spacetime.

Henry Stapp’s Mindful Universe and the Psycho-Physical Bridge – There’s no place for Descartes’ ‘matter’ in a quantum Mindnature universe.

Amit Goswami – Scientific Proof of the Existence of God? – God as the ultimate personification of the quantum Mindnature of the Universe?

Dawkins’ Middle World: Reality or Illusion?

We take a look at the ambiguity and inconsistency which resides at the heart of the Dawkinsian worldview. In a talk given in Oxford in 2006, entitled Queerer than we can suppose!, Dawkins told his audience that evolution had obligingly supplied us with brains which fitted us for habitation of what he called the ‘Middle World,’ the realm of reality midway between the quantum and the cosmological. However, the quantum evidence suggests that our minds, created by the Universal Mindnature, have fashioned both our brains and the Middle World that we appear to inhabit. When the implications of Dawkins’ own talk are fully appreciated it is quite clear that they undermine the materialist evolutionary metaphysics adopted within most of Dawkins’ work.

A Godless TOE Deified!

Far from being a mere possible addition to the Hawking-Mlodinow metaphysical model, we shall see in the course of this chapter that such a `mystical` vision of the creative source of the process of the universe is required in order for the proposed TOE to get off the ground.

Quantum Epiontic Mind Matrix

Beginning with an overview of Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek’s notion of the ‘Grid’, which is the ‘Matrix’ that constitutes the ‘primary ingredient’ of reality, we note that he has, in his haste to get to grips with the ‘material’ of reality, become unconscious of consciousness. Therefore we reinstall this much more ‘primary ingredient’ with the help of, firstly, the Buddhist Dzogchen (Great Perfection) version of the Universal Matrix of Mindnature which indicates the ultimate nature to be ‘emptiness and cognizance, and also the recent quantum ‘epiontic’ paradigm, which indicates, in conformity with the Dzogchen view, that cognition (epistemological activity) solidifies ontology.

Quantum Evo-Devo Darwinism: The Internal Intelligence of Evolution

The new evolutionary-development perspective indicates that widely separated species, flies and humans for instance, share a common underlying genetic structure. This revolution in our understanding of the role of genetic structure and functioning, which undermines the materialist ultra-Darwinian viewpoint, indicates that the evolutionary development of animal morphology may be the result of a quantum evolution, through ‘implicate’ layers of templates for modules of functionality, which eventually manifest on the ‘material’ level as the multitudinous variety of species. The Evo-Devo perspective, therefore, is completely harmonious with the latest ‘quantum Darwinism’ perspective, which suggests that the evolution of material structures result from the functioning of an ultimate quantum ‘epiontic’ Mindnature.

Quantum Epiontic God?

We develop an Epiontic Constrained Relativistic Metaphysics of Religious Diversity. The previous chapters should have made it fully apparent that quantum physics, when not viewed through the distorting lens of an inappropriate materialist prejudice, lends support for a metaphysics of ultimate intentionality that reveals a spiritual nature at the heart of reality which, of necessity, will reveal itself in differing, although related, forms of expression. Furthermore, it has been shown that the ‘material’ realm is in fact an epiphenomenon ‘created’ by the ultimate Mindnature in order that increasingly more evolved levels of awareness and consciousness are achieved by sentient beings. The ultimate spiritual qualities ‘contained’ within the infinite potentiality of the Universal Mindnature, whilst clearly having constraints of nature as awareness, interconnectedness and nonduality (as revealed by quantum physics), may be articulated and thereby experienced through various mystical religious forms, each of which provides an epion-tically generated ‘symbolic form’ through which the qualities of the Ultimate Mindnature manifest into the dualistic realm of experience.

Quantum Buddhism and the Higgs Discovery: The Power of Emptiness

An exploration of the interconnections and implications of quantum field theory and the Higgs discovery in the light of the Buddhist metaphysics of emptiness. Quantum fields as aspects of Buddhist 'emptiness'. The necessity of cognitive aspects within quantum fields of reality. The Higgs discovery as the complete demise of materialist ideology. Enlightenment as the ultimate and direct experience of the immaterial, spiritual nature of the cognitive aspect of the quantum fields of the process of reality.

Buddhist philosophers have known about the 'empty' nature of the apparently 'material' word:

"Now I shall cast to the winds concepts of solid objects with mass!"
      -Dromtonpa (11th century Buddhist philosopher)

The Higgs Discovery now shows they were correct:

"The concept of mass has vanished in a puff of logic!"
-Jim Baggot (from his book Higgs)
